Advertisements abound for work at home opportunities that can make you rich in days or weeks.  Are those real opportunities or scams?  Being realistic about what to expect from a work at home business can help you find the right business for you so that you can keep your business for the long term.

Be Prepared to Work - When you are looking for work at home opportunities there are a lot of different jobs to sort through.  Many of those ads sound very tempting with promises of huge paychecks and little work.  Yet, when was the last time you got a big reward for doing nothing.  Almost all jobs take work.  They take business building and effort.  Even in jobs where people claim to get big paychecks for little work, there is still work involved.

Many companies that offer affiliate programs get calls about the lack of huge paychecks.  Many of the affiliates got into those particular work at home opportunities because of the literature out there that says you can make a lot of money by not having to do a lot of work.  However, many of them found that there is a lot of work and patience involved.  Whenever you start a business it can take months or years for you to break even and start making a profit.  Yet, if you are willing to stick it out, those are the work at home opportunities that will stay with you for the long term.

Know What’s Real - Also, you need to be careful when you see “get in on the ground floor” or  “Learn the secret that will make you rich.”  These lines are enticing, and they draw people in easily.  More often than not there is something fishy about a company that does not tell you about their business.  You should be able to look into the company and the type of business before you consider their work at home opportunities.

Whenever you consider work at home opportunities you should be able to do research into the business.  For instance, many stuffing envelope scams do not have legitimate business names.  They only use a P.O. Box and have no customer service phone numbers – just an e-mail address.  If you cannot speak to a person, then it probably is not legitimate.  Real work at home opportunities allow you to get help and talk to real people. 

Give Yourself Time - One of the reasons for the negativity surrounding work at home opportunities is that people often get into something expecting big things and then drop the business when things don’t go their way quickly.  Building a business takes time.  You should give yourself at least a year to build a business.  You have to make contacts, follow up, and gain clients one at a time.  That doesn’t happen right away.
